Severe weather in the Philippines: what to expect and how DCX responds

The Philippines experiences a wet and dry season, and severe weather can, at times, affect the availability, connectivity, and safety of team members based there. This article outlines the weather patterns that they may experience throughout the year, how these events may impact operations, and the steps DCX takes to support both team members and clients when disruptions occur.

Philippine weather seasons and typhoon timing

The Philippines generally follows two seasons: a dry season, usually from December through May, and a wet season, typically from June through November. Tropical storm and typhoon activity is most common during the wet season, with activity typically peaking between July and October.

Outside of this window, storms are less frequent, though the country's location within the Pacific typhoon belt means severe weather can occur at other times of year as well.

Clients are encouraged to monitor the official PAGASA weather website (the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) for up-to-date forecasts, storm tracking, and official advisories throughout the year.

Potential impact of severe weather

Depending on the strength and path of a storm, severe weather can affect operations in several ways, including:

  • Power interruptions, ranging from brief outages to more extended disruptions in significantly affected areas.
  • Reduced or unstable internet connectivity.
  • Reduced ability to safely travel or access reliable power and internet.
  • In more severe cases, evacuation or safety precautions that take priority over work.

The scale of impact varies considerably by storm and by location. Most disruptions are short-lived, but DCX plans for a range of scenarios to keep clients informed and team members supported.

How DCX responds during severe weather

DCX proactively responds when severe weather is forecast or actively affecting the Philippines.

Our priority in any weather event is, first, the safety of our team members, and second, maintaining clear and timely communication with clients throughout.

We monitor our team members' online and attendance status in real time to identify those impacted. We additionally check in directly with affected team members to confirm their safety and wellbeing. And finally, DCX Customer Success Managers and Team Leads provide proactive communication to clients, keeping you informed of the situation, any impact on your team member's availability, and the steps being taken to address it.

                Additional support options

Where a team member's ability to work is affected by an outage or connectivity issue, DCX has several tools in place to help minimize disruption:

                1. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

Team members can request to use a personal laptop through our IT team's BYOD process and requirements. This is not limited to home use and provides the flexibility to work from another suitable location, provided they have access to reliable power and a secure Wi-Fi network or mobile hotspot. Our IT team promptly addresses outage-related BYOD requests.

Please take note:  The DCX team will seek the client’s approval for BYOD.

                2. Community Center

For team members near the DCX Community Center, this offers a reliable backup location with stable power and internet access. Team Leads help coordinate which team members are close enough for this to be a practical option.

                3. Loaner Laptops

DCX maintains 30 company laptops in circulation for situations such as this: 25 allocated for standard requests, and 5 reserved specifically for emergencies, such as a power outage, and released only with senior management or IT Head approval. Requests are submitted through the internal DCX IT platform (informal or verbal requests are not accepted), and emergency requests can be expedited with as little as 3 business days' notice. Once approved, a loaner laptop can support a team member for up to 45 days.

                Managing lost hours

Where a power outage or connectivity issue directly cuts into a scheduled shift, DCX works through the following options, generally in this order:

                1. Shift adjustment. The team members extend their shift to make up for the lost time. This is the most straightforward option and our first approach whenever it is workable.
                2. Accrued PTO. If a shift extension is not practical, the team member may use their own accrued PTO to cover the gap. Team members accrue 8 hours of PTO per month, giving the most reasonable cushion to leverage.
                3. Undertime adjustment. If PTO has already been used, the lost time is recorded as undertime.

                      Undertime and Billing

DCX team members work a standard 9-hour shift that includes a one-hour lunch and two 15-minute breaks. If a team member experiences unexpected undertime, they immediately notify their team lead, who then keeps the client informed - sharing the reason for the absence, when it started, the expected return time, and how the missed hours will be made up, with updates provided throughout.

Missed time can be recovered in several ways, such as extending the shift, using leave credits, taking it unpaid, adjusting break times, using an approved personal device, or relocating to the DCX Community Center. This approach ensures clients stay informed while service continuity is maintained.

Financial support: the DCX Benevolence Fund

In addition to the operational support outlined above, DCX also offers a Benevolence Fund that team members can access in times of genuine need, including hardship caused by severe weather events.
